“Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.”

It’s fear that brought them to be bound;
Cold fear that gripped the gun.
And fear that rushed to stand on ground
That took their smiling son.
This man is, as they say, living the dream .

Like quilted illustration — I must get more educated about this incredible art form.
I’ve always had a soft spot for uncomfortable furniture. So I was delighted to find the image of this little stool inspired by Pieter Bruegel’s Twelve Proverbs expertly crafted by “Yorkshire Stewart” His description and Bruegel’s painting are below.

From “My Military Campaign”:
“The man was not in uniform, and was not armed. He was a stranger in the country; that was all we ever found out about him. The thought of him got to preying upon me every night; I could not get rid of it. I could not drive it away, the taking of that unoffending life seemed such a wanton thing. And it seemed an epitome of war; that all war must be just that–the killing of strangers against whom you feel no personal animosity; strangers whom, in other circumstances, you would help if you found them in trouble, and who would help you if you needed it.”

When clans are killed in foreign lands
By armies of their own
And arms are hastened to their hands
Will wars be won or sown?
There’s a great feature out today on Dug North, automata artist and long time automata blogger at The Automata / Automaton Blog. Dug was also recently featured in the special features for the DVD release of Hugo. Dug has done so much to promote and cultivate contemporary automata (including my own work), it’s good to see his years of hard work resulting in some recognition!
The article is at Howl in Lowell and the associated video is below.

By Gerhard Dohrn-van Rossum of the Medievalist blog:
“Working for eighteen years under the patronage of the Norman King Roger II Guiscard of Sicily, who gathered scholars from many regions at his court in Palermo, the Moroccan geographer Al-Idrīsī in 1154 completed a description and an atlas of maps of the known world.”
Honnecourt’s portfolio contains many splendors but I’ve always been particularly fond of this humble little sketch.
